Dried Sour Cherries

Sour Cherries: Dried sour cherries are one of the best sources of antioxidants and melatonin. They also contain a natural anti-inflammatory compound, and they taste good too! As a rule cherries are categorized as either sweet or tart (sour). Sweet cherries are grown mostly in the Northwest, while sour cherries usually come from Michigan. Sour cherries are also known as pie cherries because of their popularity in baking. Add a few dried tart cherries to your next can of cherry pie filling to jazz up your cherry pie!

Although both sweet and sour cherries have many health benefits, sour cherries are much higher in beneficial compounds. Their reduced sugar content also makes them suitable for diabetics, and they contain anthocyanins which help the body produce insulin. As a rule, darker cherries contain more beneficial anthocyanins. Cherries are also high in vitamin C.

Cherries are a stone pit fruit like plums, apricots, nectarines, peaches... Dried sour cherries are great in trail mix (gorp), sprinkled on cereal or salads, or topping ice cream. Baked into cakes they add a nice bite and spark of sour, and they can be mixed with canned cherries to reduce the sweetness of cherry pie filling. Tart cherries can be found fresh, dried, as juice, or frozen.
